3.4.2 Other Special Status Mammals
A review of species accounts, including historic ranges, provided the following list of
other special status mammals that could occur within the study area:
- riparian brush rabbit (Sylvilagus bachmani riparius) a Federal Category 1 candidate
for listing by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as Threatened or Endangered,
and listed as Endangered by the State of California;
- San Joaquin pocket mouse (Perognathus inornatus inornatus) a California
Department of Fish and Game "Special Animal";
- San Joaquin Valley (riparian) wood rat (Neotoma fuscipes riparia) a Federal
Category 1 candidate for listing by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as
Threatened or Endangered, and a California Department of Fish and Game
"Species of Special Concern";
- San Joaquin kit fox (Vulpes macrotis mutica) listed as Endangered by the Federal
Government and listed as Threatened by the State of California;
- Ringtail (Bassariscus astutus) a California Department of Fish and Game "Fully
Protected Species"; and
- American badger (Taxidea taxus) a California Department of Fish and Game
"Special Animal".
Information gathered for the special status mammal species has been compiled from the
California Department of Fish and Game's NDDB and reports such as the State Route-120
Oakdale Bypass Report; as well as private observations of Audubon members
(Reeve pers. comm.);
and incidental sightings by USFWS, CDFG, DWR personnel during field work and
surveys (Appendix E). Informal CDFG surveys began 12 May 1993 and continued through
14 December 1994 at which time the DWR requested further survey effort to be suspended.
No formal surveys or trapping efforts were conducted for these mammal species.
