Yellowfin Gobies in San Francisco Bay

Yellowfin Goby (Acanthogobius flavimanus)

Distribution of yellowfin gobies in San Francisco Bay
The yellowfin goby, a native to Japan, Korea, and northern China, was accidently introduced to San Francisco Bay in the late 1950's. The yellowfin goby grows to approximately 240 mm and is larger than any other California goby.

Seasonal movements of yellowfin gobies within the San Francisco Bay Estuary follow a predictable pattern. Spawned in the winter and early spring, apparently the bulk of which occurs within San Pablo Bay, the YOY rapidly make their way upstream into Suisun Bay Delta, presumably aided by tidal currents.

By late fall/early summer yellowfin gobies begin their descent back towards San Pablo Bay, to spawn and, for the majority, to die.

Annual abundance indices for the YOY are generated by the San Francisco Bay Monitoring Program using otter trawl data.
