 Pacific Herring (Clupea pallasi)
Distribution of Pacific herring in San
Francisco Bay
Pacific herring are a coastal pelagic schooling species that
use bays and estuaries as both spawning and nursery areas. Pacific herring are
found from northern Baja California to Japan and westward.
In San Francisco Bay they have supported a commercial roe fishery since 1973.
In California, Pacific herring mature earlier than the more northern stocks.
Some Pacific herring mature at two years, and by the third year all herring are mature.
Pacific herring spawn only once during a season and after spawning the spent females return to the
ocean.
In San Francisco Bay, spawning takes place from December through March.
The spawned eggs are adhesive, attaching most commonly on eel grass and
occasionally on other algae.
.
Annual abundance indices for
juveniles are generated from the San Francisco Bay Monitoring Program
using midwater trawl data.
