Heptacarpus stimpsoni in San Francisco Bay

Heptacarpus stimpsoni

Distribution of Heptacarpus stimpsoni in San Francisco Bay
Heptacarpus stimpsoni (the Stimpson coastal shrimp) is distributed from Sitka, Alaska to San Diego, California and is common subtidally on soft bottoms and occasionally in eelgrass beds. In San Francisco Bay it is locally abundant in Central and South bays and periodically collected in San Pablo Bay. H. stimpsoni is small relative to Crangon spp. and Palaemon, with a maximum length of 35 mm.

Abundance of Heptacarpus stimpsoni was relatively low previous to 1988, but increased dramatically in 1989. Over the study period, it has been the fourth most abundant species of caridean shrimp collected.

Annual abundance indices for H. stimpsoni are generated from the San Francisco Bay Monitoring Program using otter trawl data.
