The fyke survey at Sacramento is used to estimate the
relative abundance and timing of nearshore juveniles entering the delta. Fykes have been deployed at Sacramento since 1992 and have been fished generally
from fall through spring.
Tidal influences at Sacramento make it difficult to measure volume
sampled for this gear. The combination of the outer wing depth, wing mouth width,
and flows from the gaging station at Freeport should allow us a crude estimation.
Fished in conjunction with the trawls at Sacramento, we are attempting
to determine the relative importance of fry moving into the delta each year.
Fykes target near shore fry more efficiently than the trawl, which more
effectively samples smolts using the mid-channel to migrate.

Live box; 0.3m by 0.3m by 0.6m
Crew - two biologists/technicians (fykes are usually tended by the
Sacramento trawling crew)
